NETWORKING TUTORIAL

Networking Windows 2000 with NetBEUI or TCP/IP

Why Network? Primarily to share folders, printers, and internet access.

Basic Principles. All Windows networking depends on similar principles. You must create the same user name and password (or no password) on each computer. You must log on with that user name and password. You must be in the same workgroup. You must have the same protocol on each computer. (Default protocol is TCP/IP). You must run the Network SetupWizard. You must enable file and print sharing in Windows 98 and Windows Millenium. (It occurs automatically in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.) You must create a shared folder so that you can see if your networking is successful. You must configure the firewalls in Norton Security to allow communication between computers. (You must disable the XP firewall.) This tutorial addresses each of these tasks.

This tutorial assumes that all computers are connected to the internet through a Cable/DSL Router and Cable/DSL Modem, and you have Norton Internet Security installed on your computers. A Cable/DSL Router only costs about $70. Your internet service provider provides the Cable/DSL Modem.

I have broken down the procedure to six steps.

I.                  Create the same user

II.               Enter a workgroup name

III.           Run Internet Connection Wizard

IV.            Install NetBEUI protocol (Optional)

V.               Configure Norton Security Firewall

VI.            Share a Folder or Printer – (See Windows XP tutorial)

I.                   Create the same user with administrative privileges with no logon password.

1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Users and Passwords and click on Add.

2. Type in User’s name. Remember that the User name must be the same on all computers to be networked.

3. Leave the password blank and click on Next.

4. Check Others: and be sure it shows Administrators.

5. Click OK. You can see the new User that was added.

II.                Entering a Workgroup name.

1. Go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> System. Go to Network Identification tab. Click on Properties.

2. Type in a Computer name. Select Workgroup: and type in the workgroup name. Click OK. (Remember that the Workgroup name must be the same for all computers.)

III. Run Internet Connection Wizard

1.      This is only necessary if you are not currently connected to the internet.

2.      Go to Start -> Programs ->Accessories -> Communications -> Internet Connection Wizard

3.      You can also get to the wizard through Help.

IV. Installing NetBEUI Protocol. (Optional)

1. Right click on My Network Places, and click on Properties.

2. Right click on Local Area Connection and select Properties. Click on Install.

3. Select Protocol and click on Add.

4. Select NetBEUI Protocol and click OK.

5. You will see that NetBEUI Protocol has been installed. Click on Close.

V. Change firewall settings in Norton Internet Security to allow the computers to see each other.

1.      Go to Start -> Programs -> Norton Internet Security

2.      Double click the Personal Firewall.

3.Select the Networking tab.

4.Click on the Trusted box. Fill in the IP address of your network and the network mask. It will probably be the same as shown here.

5. Restart your computer and repeat this process for each computer you want to network.

VI.           File and print sharing (See Xp networking tutorial)

 1. Right click on the folder you wish to share, click on Sharing…, and select Share this folder. (Note that you cannot share individual files, but you can share the file in a folder.)
